A plant or tree labeled a California native isn’t always suited to grow in the Golden State. California enjoys such environmental diversity when it comes to gardening that native species often end up in places where they won’t thrive. And that’s a problem. But the California Native Plant Society and the Jepson Herbarium at UC Berkeley have teamed to make it easier to grow plants, trees and produce. They have launched the online resource to help people conserve water, make gardening more successful and cut down on money lost when trying to make plants grow where they’re not inclined to. Lessons in Landscaping: City gardens demonstrate how to create a drought-tolerant oasis.

Back in Glendora, the garden is a year-round display that demonstrates cutting back on irrigation doesn’t necessarily mean the end of a green lawn. On the sidewalk end of the garden, folks will find two plots of Native Mow Free sod — a blend of Western Mokelumne, Molate and Idaho fescue grasses — that can be maintained as a turf lawn or left unmowed as it is here. Victorian Christmas Excursion

Tour of Victorian Christmas Decorated Bembridge House: 2 p.m. Stan Poe will provide us a talk about the history of the house. The house will be decorated with a different Victorian Christmas in each room. If we arrive early for the tour, we can see the gardens.
